Many pies were entered in our Pi(e) Day Baking Challenge with Instructables this year, but it’s time to raise our forks to the grandest and geekiest of all. Check out the winners of this year’s contest! Thanks to everyone who entered.

I think it’s safe to say this may be the geekiest baking project I’ve done to date. And that’s saying something, as I am prone to geeking out in the kitchen a wee little bit. I mean, it’s a pie made entirely of apple numbers. And then topped with more numbers, this time of the crust variety. Oh, and not only numbers, you see, but the numbers of that beloved symbol of Nerdland (and I mean that in a good way), Pi.

What happens when you put ¨pi¨, ¨pie graph¨and ¨pie¨ together?! After lots of brainstorming, I have decide to use pie’s closest relative, “tart”, to help me realize my idea… As I am not a super experienced baker, I have sourced the recipes of the crust and filling from my favorite food blog: Serious Eats! I found the recipes very well written, not to mention a bonus slide show that explains the steps in detail. That´s why I have illustrated a representation of the web page instead of repeating the actual recipes.


To 3.14 or not to pie by hertzgamma

So what about π? How do you mix maths with cherrys, jam and dough? Hmm … sounds awkward indeed. The ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter …. π = 3.141592653….. wait wait … you put it in the oven and then eat it?! I am confused now
